All about Macros:
Macros, short for Macronutrients, are the essential elements of a diet, that can be broken down into a total of seven different categories, including; fats, carbohydrates, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals, protein and finally water. A daily process for many people has become counting one’s macro intake, here is what ACERO Trainer Ben Putland had to say on why macros are indeed beneficial for bodybuilding and sculpting muscle?
“Counting and understanding Macros is so important, as it allows you to exactly understand where your energy is coming from and how that will affect your body’s overall performance, functioning and aesthetic. Understanding the right ratio of protein, fats & carbs your body needs to lose, maintain or gain body fat & muscle is key to achieving the results you want”.
Ben says that for bodybuilders and performance athletes, counting macros will become second nature to them. “You have to be nutritionally savvy when entering such an industry, and knowing exactly what goes in your mouth and how it will support your body for optimal functioning and aesthetic is a necessary skill.” Counting macros is a great way to assess and improve on one’s body and physique, especially over a long period of time.
Top tips for training and sport performance:
As an ACERO Trainer, Ben Putland has absolutely learnt a thing or two about particular training techniques and how to improve one’s overall sports performance. Ben wishes to remind all elite performance athletes who take both their training and performance seriously to focus on five key components of fitness being, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.
“Putting effort into each of these factors ensures you will have a well-balanced workout routine that balances performance with longevity and health. Another is to warm up properly as it is essential to be able to perform well at your given sport, stay injury free and reduce muscle soreness after your workout which means less recovery time is needed between training sessions”, says Ben.
It’s imperative that one fuels their body after training with the right amount of macros, to be able to meet the demands of training and exercise. Therefore macro counting should come hand in hand with training, as it will help you to stay on top of your diet and peak condition. To tone and build body muscle there are particular workouts and exercises one can follow. Ben says, that if you are wanting to work on your strength, size and building muscle that lifting weights should remain a consistent priority, as this will help elevate one’s metabolism so that calories continue to burn long after the gym.
“My favourite exercises, that I incorporate into every workout to tone and build muscle, are compound movements. These exercises work multiple muscle groups at the same time creating time efficiency within your workout, improving strength, flexibility and coordination as well as being able to burn more calories than standard isolation exercises. Incorporating Single arm bicep curls, squats, deadlifts, Lunges, Bench Presses, Pull Ups, Push Ups, Overhead Press & Barbell Row, are great for toning the body”, says ACERO Trainer Ben Putland.
How to maintain a healthy diet:
It is so important to lead a healthy balanced lifestyle especially when it comes to what we are eating and drinking. If you are looking to eat a little healthier, packing nutrient rich food is shut you need. Ben says, “Investing in nutrient dense foods means investing in your body for optimal functioning eg. getting more bang for your buck instead of the dreaded sugar slump. Nutrient dense meals are also so important for muscle recovery and repair and to help you reach and attain your desired goals”.
In this busy day and age though if you happen to be lacking some cooking inspiration or are in a rush, but need a healthy meal, Ben recommends subscribing to a meal delivery service that suits your very own goals. The company, MACROS delivers fresh, portioned meals directly to your doorstep, and can cater to an array of dietary needs. MACROS allows all customers to choose their meal plan according to their diet and lifestyle. MACROS is unlike any other food subscription service, as this particular service uses entirely fresh ingredients that are high in protein with good carbs, that are already portion controlled. There is nothing more satisfying than a healthy ready-made meal that not only tastes good, but is good for you and your body.
Some nutrient dense foods to add to your diet are; breads and cereals, legumes, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, asparagus, beans and eggs. Healthy fats are best sourced from nuts and seeds, fish and avocado. Just cause you’re eating healthier doesn’t mean that your meals have to be bland and boring, some of Ben’s favourite healthy, quick and tasty meals are; a classic chicken stir fry with veggies, rice & quinoa, or a Mexican burrito bowl with slow cooked beef, black beans, basmati rice & grilled corn. YUM!
